German Food

Most of the time when we travel, if it is at all possible we stay in an apartment.  It saves our sanity because going out to eat for every single meal every day with two little people is not always a walk in the park.  Having a kitchen is just so much easier.  However, in Luneberg we were in a regular hotel - so no kitchen.   

On this trip, W was at his conference for most of every day so the girls and I were on our own.  To be honest, I wasn't really looking forward to doing breakfast, lunch and dinner every day in restaurants on my own with two little ones and a very, very small grasp of German food vocabulary.  But actually we had a blast checking out places to eat around town.  The people everywhere were very kind and generous with our girls.  They often taught the girls a little German and they loved when the girls would leave saying "dankeschön."  In one bakery the woman behind the counter took the time to help me pick out a traditional German pastry that the girls would like.  Then we ate it while watching a video of it being made.

Out to dinner with a friend.  We didn't know the restaurant had this until we were seated but next to our table there was a whole play area for kids, including a video game at a good age level for our girls.  It seems that everywhere we go there is something to entertain the children.  That's a rare thing where we're from in the States.  We know our one favorite coffee shop that has a train set (holla, Leopard Forest Cafe!) but where we're from it certainly isn't a given that places will have an area set aside to keep the kids happy.
